The Victims
On November 13, 2022, four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in an off-campus rental home on King Road in Moscow, Idaho:
Kaylee Goncalves, 21 — Senior majoring in general studies, originally from Rathdrum, Idaho
Madison Mogen, 21 — Senior majoring in marketing, Kaylee's best friend since childhood
Xana Kernodle, 20 — Junior majoring in marketing, from Post Falls, Idaho
Ethan Chapin, 20 — Freshman studying recreation, sport and tourism management; Xana's boyfriend
Two other roommates were home that night and survived, though initially unaware of what had occurred.
The Crime
The murders occurred between approximately 4:00 AM and 4:25 AM on November 13, 2022. The four victims were stabbed multiple times with a large fixed-blade knife, later identified as a Ka-Bar-style knife. The attack was swift and brutal.
The crimes weren't discovered until later that morning when surviving roommates called friends to the house, concerned that one of the victims appeared unconscious and wouldn't wake up.
The Investigation
The Moscow Police Department, with assistance from the FBI and Idaho State Police, launched a massive investigation:
- A white Hyundai Elantra seen near the crime scene
- DNA evidence recovered from a knife sheath left at the scene
- Cell phone data and surveillance footage tracking vehicle movements
- Genetic genealogy techniques to identify the suspect
The investigation was initially criticized for its lack of public information, though police maintained they were protecting the integrity of their case.
