Before the Interview

Research the Company

  • Company mission and values
  • Recent news and developments
  • Products/services and competitors
  • Company culture and reviews
  • Your interviewer's background (LinkedIn)

Why it matters: Interviewers can tell immediately who did their homework.

Prepare Your Stories

  • Situation: Set the scene
  • Task: Your responsibility
  • Action: What you specifically did
  • Result: Quantifiable outcome
  • A challenge you overcame
  • A time you led/influenced others
  • A failure and what you learned
  • A conflict you resolved
  • Your greatest achievement

Practice Common Questions

  • "Tell me about yourself" (2-minute pitch)
  • "Why do you want this job?"
  • "Why are you leaving your current role?"
  • "What are your strengths/weaknesses?"
  • "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"

Practice out loud. Record yourself. Get feedback.

During the Interview

First Impressions

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early
  • Dress one level above the company norm
  • Firm handshake, genuine smile
  • Make eye contact
  • Remember names

Body Language

  • Sit up straight, lean slightly forward
  • Keep hands visible (not crossed)
  • Maintain eye contact 60-70% of time
  • Nod to show engagement
  • Mirror interviewer's energy level

Answering Questions

  • Listen completely before answering
  • Take a breath to gather thoughts
  • Answer concisely (1-2 minutes max)
  • Provide specific examples
  • End strong, don't trail off
  • Don't fake it
  • Explain your reasoning process
  • Offer to follow up

Ask Great Questions

  • "What does success look like in this role?"
  • "What are the biggest challenges facing the team?"
  • "How would you describe the team culture?"
  • "What's the typical career path from this role?"

Never ask about salary/benefits in first interview (unless they bring it up).

After the Interview

Follow Up

  • Send thank-you email to each interviewer
  • Reference something specific from your conversation
  • Reiterate your interest and fit
  • Keep it brief (3-4 sentences)

If You Don't Hear Back

  • Follow up after stated timeline + 2 days
  • One follow-up email is appropriate
  • Move on if no response to follow-up

Virtual Interview Specifics

  • Test technology beforehand
  • Good lighting, clean background
  • Look at camera, not screen
  • Have notes nearby (discreetly)
  • Close all other applications
