The Timeline

October 2003: Jobs diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during a routine CT scan.

2003-2004: Delayed surgery for 9 months, trying alternative treatments.

July 2004: Finally underwent surgery (Whipple procedure).

2008: Appeared visibly thin; denied health rumors.

January 2009: Took medical leave; received liver transplant in Tennessee.

January 2011: Second medical leave.

August 24, 2011: Resigned as Apple CEO; became chairman.

October 5, 2011: Died at home in Palo Alto, surrounded by family.

What Type of Cancer?

Jobs had a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (pNET)—a rare, slower-growing form that represents about 5% of pancreatic cancers.

Importantly: This is NOT the more common pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which is almost always fatal within months. Jobs' type often responds well to surgery if caught early.

The Alternative Medicine Controversy

  • Special diets (fruit-heavy)
  • Acupuncture
  • Herbal remedies
  • Spiritualism
  • Juice fasts

Did this cost his life?
Many experts believe early surgery might have cured him. Jobs himself later expressed regret:

"I really didn't want them to open up my body, so I tried to see if a few other things would work."

His biographer Walter Isaacson noted that those close to Jobs were frustrated by his decision.

Later Treatment

  • 2004: Whipple procedure (removed part of pancreas)
  • 2009: Liver transplant (cancer had spread)
  • Experimental treatments
  • Protein-based targeted therapies

Despite aggressive treatment, the cancer had metastasized.

His Final Days

  • At home with family
  • Said goodbye to close colleagues
  • Continued working on Apple projects
  • Planned his own memorial service

His last words, according to his sister Mona Simpson: "Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow."

Apple After Jobs

Jobs announced Tim Cook as successor:

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."

He died six weeks after resigning.

Legacy

  • Memorials at Apple stores globally
  • Tributes from tech leaders
  • Thousands of personal testimonials

His impact on personal computing, phones, tablets, and digital entertainment continues.
